In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction

Winner of the 2009 Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize, this book is written by Dr. Gabor Maté, a renowned addiction expert. It calls for a compassionate approach toward addiction, whether in ourselves or in others.

Dr. Maté believes that the source of addictions is not to be found in genes but in the early childhood environment. His book draws on cutting-edge science, real-life stories (a dramatically close view of his drug addicted patients) and clinical experience to show that all addictions originate in trauma and emotional loss.

It explores the fundamental nature of human addiction and the current epidemic of different types of addictions with society.
