The New Anatomy of Melancholy

BBC Radio 4 has produced an excellent series of twelve episodes about what, a long time ago, used to be called ‘melancholy’ and is now generally called depression.

Eight of these programmes (each around 13 minutes long) are available for listening now, with four more yet to come.

Episode 1: Who is Free from Melancholy. The programme makers say: “Four hundred years ago, Robert Burton wrote an epic attempt to understand melancholy. What can it teach us today?”

Included within the series is a look at a wide range of ideas – some from mainstream psychiatry and some not – concerning depression and ways of helping those who suffer from it.
