How your emotions change the shape of your heart

“A record of our emotional life is written on our hearts”

As editor of this website, I ask: “Does depression, for example, have a largely biophysical cause, as some psychiatrists claim (hence prescribed drugs to counter an alleged causal chemical imbalance in the brain), or is it more the other way around, namely that depression has biophysical effects? More broadly, to what extent can our emotional and psychological states of mind cause profound biophysical changes?”

In this 15 minute video, recorded at a TED Summit 2019, cardiologist and author Sandeep Jauhar explores the mysterious ways our emotions impact the health of our hearts – causing them to change shape in response to grief or fear, to literally break in response to emotional heartbreak – and calls for a shift in how we care for our most vital organ.
